Old Boys on fireIn my programme notes from last Saturday I made no secret of the fact I’m a Leith Athletic fan. I enjoy watching them play and enjoy leading sides against one of the best footballing sides at our level. We expected (and set-up our side to make it) an open game…the sole objective being to score one more goal than Leith and win our place in the last 4 of the King Cup. It took 2 of our old guard (Donal and Cloudy) and an ‘old boy’ (Willie Bremner) to score the goals which took us through 3-2. It was great to see Donal and Cloudy leading our fight back in the 2nd half…with both of them scoring, before Willie came off the bench to score the winner against his former Club. I’m confident the goals will lift and help all 3 players, in particular Willie who looked more like himself on Sat past, coming on to provide real drive and energy from deep. On the day, had our final ball been better and/or we demonstrated a little bit more composure in front of goal, perhaps it could have been more comfortable. It was equally pleasing to come from behind and win against a side who made it difficult on the day. Coming from behind to win is always a good feeling, it breeds confidence and deepens levels of self-belief. Watching Andy Murray claw his way back and deliver silverware on Sunday was a perfect reminder that it’s the journey that counts. A year ago I’m fairly certain he would have lost that game…however, winning Wimbledon opened the door for him, helped him to break free from the prison he had created in his mind. He climbed the final step, so to speak…and is now a different player. One last step taken to reach new heights…on 27th April we step onto the semi-final steps once again, when our goal will be to reach our 1st final together. Before that, we face 2 x tough and important games, the first of them coming this Saturday at Meadowbank vs. ‘The City’. As ever, our immediate focus is to prepare as best we can for the next challenge. |
