Motion helps us march into third round

Posted on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013

A Kevin Motion goal was enough to secure our place in the third round of the King Cup at Peffermill today.

We started the game well and John Ferguson attempted to spectacularly volley home a Gary Cennerazzo cross after just 5 minutes. He didn’t make the contact he wanted to however and the ball was cleared by the Uni defense.

At the other end, Uni centre half Danny Ward fired a freekick just past the post from the edge of the penalty area.

We were awarded a freekick ourselves after 28 minutes when Jack Beesley was impeded on the edge of the penalty area. On form midfielder Kevin Motion placed the ball and curled a neat left footed shot past Uni keeper Mark Tait and into the net.

Both sides had chances to score just before half time however both keepers made comfortable saves.

Into the second half, we seemed to struggle playing towards the low Sun and Edinburgh University put us under a lot of pressure as they searched for an equaliser.

Substitute Mike Gray managed to get his head onto a number of crosses however he wasn’t able to get anything on target and we held on for the win.

As the game went into injury time Mark Whatley was bizarrely shown a 2nd yellow card when it appeared he had won a freekick, then referee Jordan Stokoe sent manager Dougie Samuel to the stand for questioning what the decision was for.

Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Ally MacKinnon – a superb performance from Ally, back after injury, who enjoyed a return to Peffermill and frustrated the Edinburgh University attack all afternoon.

Team: Flockhart, Whatley, Cennerazzo, O’Donnell, MacKinnon, Grant, Beesley, Motion (Seeley), Bremner, McLeod (Wringe), Ferguson unused: Sivewright, Raiker, Martin
