The Seniors lost 2 – 0 to Stirling University today in the semi final of the Image Printers Cup.
We started brightly however the Uni took the lead in the 12th minute. A free kick from the half way line caused hesitation in our box and diminutive striker Mason nipped in to head the ball into the corner of the net. The remainder of the half saw us have most of the possession but play seemed to break down when we reached the Uni box. Donal Henretty was causing most problems however he was on the receiving end of some physical challenges which saw him pick up a nasty head knock just on the half time whistle.
The second half started brightly for us and Kevin Motion had a chance with a fee kick from the edge of the box but he hit the wall. Just when we looked like creating the equaliser Lee Nichol drove in a powerful drive from 20 yards to give the Uni a second. Willie Bremner had already come on and was causing problems as we pushed forward. Walker produced a superb close range save from John Grant’s effort and then defender Atkins blocked the ball just as John Ferguson was about to tap it into the net.
The Malt and Hops man of the match went to John Grant for an excellent performance at right back, both in defence and going forward.
Team: Flockhart, Grant, Cennerazzo, O’Donnell, Sivewright, Beesley, Manson, Whatley, Motion (Wringe 85), McLeod (Ferguson 75), Henretty (Bremner 63) Subs not used MacCuish, Martin
The Juniors went down 4 – 2 away to Dunbar in a league game, a penalty from Jordan Finnie and a goal from Lee Zavaroni brought us back to 2 – 2 but defensive lapses gave Dunbar the victory.
The Amateurs continued their good run. Goals from Nick Reid and Robbie Laird gave them a 2 – 1 win over Newcraighall Vics.
Also at the Academy our 17s beat North Merchiston at the Academy today in the semi final of the Craig Gowans Trophy to reach our second final of the season.
