Myles sets the StandardToday we face Hawick Royal Albert in King Cup duty at Ainslie Park, a side we’ve not faced this season, which gives the game that extra special ingredient. The King Cup has a special place in E of S football. It’s become a recent tradition that the season ends with the King Cup Final, making it a competition everyone would love to win.Just in case it was needed, last weekend demonstrated the joy and beauty of cup football. Our players and staff know the importance of reaching the performance standards we have set – in terms of work ethic, passion, desire and execution – so far this season, if we want and hope to progress today. That’s the immediate goal, to reach R2. In recent weeks a player I first came across aged 19 at Bonnyrigg Rose has been at the forefront of my mind and thoughts….namely Jackie Myles. The 2 best players I had the joy and honour of playing with were Jackie Myles and John Bird. Sadly Jackie passed away earlier this week, his funeral took place yesterday. If pressed, Jackie just edges it. Jackie was the heartbeat of a very, very, good Bonnyrigg Rose side which was full of top players….more importantly it was full of top people such as Windy, Ronnie and Pizza (and many more). Jackie set a standard in terms of ‘will to win’ which lifted and inspired others…off the park, he was so deep at times, a quiet person. On it, he turned into a genuine leader, a driving force who quite literally demanded a performance out of his fellow team mates. I loved playing alongside him, I admired and looked up to him (along, with countless others) so much. Married to these innate characteristics was a great ability with the ball at his feet and a gift for scoring goals. He was and remains a football legend, someone who set a standard, which for me sits right at the top of the pile. On and off the park Jackie left a huge footprint in my heart, I’ll miss him….Bonnyrigg no 4 was and always will be, one in a million. Sammy x |
