Injury time double secures win

Posted on Saturday, August 18th, 2012

The Seniors kept up our recent good form with a late, late 2-1 victory over Vale of Leithen in the League Cup Qualifying Group.

We started the stronger of the sides however we were unable to create any chances for a shot at goal. Donal Henretty, Keith McLeod and Jordan Finnie all had time on the ball however they found the Vale defense in form and weren’t able to turn our possession into chances.

Vale eventually opened the scoring during one of their few attacks when Wayne Sproule was tripped in the box by Donal. Sproule dusted himself down before firing home from the penalty spot to give the visitors the lead.

The second half was a very similar event. We had plenty of the ball but couldn’t seem to do anything with it while at the back our defense were coping well with any Vale attack.

Several cards were handed out as grade 1 referee Summers seemed determined to see every player in the book. Vale also had several players booked for time wasting, something which they would live to regret!

As the game entered into injury time we finally drew level. A long ball out of defense from Ali MacKinnon found sub Chris Anderson in the box. He appeared to be fouled but the ball bounced to fellow sub Andy Martin who poked the ball home from 12 yards out.

Chris Flockhart had to look sharp to prevent the Vale from re-taking the lead right away. As the visitors pushed forward trying to find a winning goal they left themselves exposed at the back. In the 95th minute a Vale corner was cleared by Whatley to Beesley, he ran forward and played the ball to Anderson who fired the ball home from a tight angle to secure the win, much to the delight of the Spartan Army.

Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Ali MacKinnon – between Ali and Kevin who played superbly through the whole match. While the subs stole the attention right at the end these two performed well through the entire game, with Ali just edging it.

Team: Flockahrt, Cennerrazzo, Henretty (Martin), Sivewright, MacKinnon, Manson, Whatley, Grant, Finnie (Anderson), McLeod (Wringe), Beesley. Unused: Trialist, O’Donnell
