Season opens with success! We had a later than expected but successful start to our 2012/13 season tonight with a 3-0 victory over Coldstream in the League Cup Qualifying Section.New summer signings Mark Whatley, Gary Cennerrazzo and Andy Martin all made their competitive debuts in a new look and very young Spartans side. Whatley, signed in the summer from Junior side Tayport had a chance to open the scoring in the first half however his strike from 20 yards went just over the bar. We did eventually open the scoring in the 39th minute when some great play from Jordan Finnie helped set up Chris Anderson who poked the ball home from 10 yards. Anderson had several chances to add to his scoring tall and extend our lead, however he saw his shots saved, shave the bar and squirm just wide. It took until the 81st minute for us to extended the lead, but we were given the perfect opportunity to do so when Andy Martin was taken out in the box. The referee pointed to the spot and up stepped John Grant to fire home. Just a minute later and Donal Henretty, just seconds on the park, set up Andy Martin, who marked his debut with a fantastic strike which flew into the top corner. Robbie Manson saw his freekick rattle the post and substitute Sean Wringe forced a great reaction save from the Coldstream keeper as the game went on however a fourth goal didn’t follow. New Spartans manager Dougie Samuel will however be delighted with the performance, the clean sheet, the three goals scored. and to start the season at home with a win. Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Andy Martin – won us a penalty then 60 seconds later smashed home a great goal – a brilliant debut! Team: Flockhart, O’Donnell, Cennerrazzo, Sivewright, Seeley, Grant, Manson, Anderson (Henretty), Finnie (Wringe), Martin (Beesley), Whatley Unused: Trialist, Trialist |
