Management thoughts on a scare at St Marks.Mike says –“In the first half yesterday we lost two sloppy goals and our centre-half through injury so Sam and I had to happy with the final result. That’s twice we’ve played Craigroyston at St Marks in recent weeks and on both occasions the home side have given us a run for our money. I won’t say we were hanging on in either game but the final whistle was greeted with a sigh of relief in the away dugout as much yesterday as it was in our League Cup section game on 20th August. We played some excellent football throughout the game yesterday so despite being two down at half-time Sam and I spoke more about keeping the faith and the pace up than chastising them over the poor defensive work at Craigie’s goals. We had to turn possession and good play into strikes on goal and that’s exactly what we did early in the second half. There were plenty of pleasing aspects to the display but there was also lot’s to work and improve on. Before the game I told those with a starting strip that Gary, Jordan, Rees and Chris were fighting for a place; that Danny, Kerr and Cloudie were now free from injury and that Dr Jon was going to be more available over the coming weeks. They would have to play out their skins to retain their jersey and the jury is out on one or two of them. One things for sure and that is Danny O’Donnell didn’t do his chances of starting next Saturday any harm. Tomorrow we travel through to Airdrie to both check out a Field Turf surface similar to that being laid at the Academy and for everyone to get some game time. Since the start of the season we have gradually got better with the performance and result at Gretna the best we’ve produced so far. Despite the final result and some of our very good play yesterday it was a step backwards in many ways and the team to start at Raydale next week could depend on who plays well tomorrow.” Mike |
