Management thoughts on our victory at Kelso

Mike says –

“We followed a good hour on Saturday with a good 90 minutes last night at Kelso, in fact we got better as the night went on. Using the exact same 16 players Sam and I changed the line-up around giving starts to Rees Smith, Andrew Sinclair and Jordan Finnie. The game had just settled down when Ali MacKinnon took a head knock (he’s such a brave big guy I think we’ll see quite a bit of him getting treatment upstairs this season) which required a visit to the local hospital. He came back near the end looking like Pudsey Bear and must be doubtful for Saturday.

Sam and I brought Dean Hoskins on at left back, pushed Rees Smith forward, Jack Beesley central midfield, Captain Bob to right back and Scott Fusco took over at centre-half. This raised a few friendly comments from the visiting support behind us as we re-arranged our pack but the balance was there and the outcome proved the management team correct.  We got stronger as the half went on and unlike Saturday we continued to be on the front foot for the entire game.

Seeming Mr Fusco never scored a free kick at the Uni in 5 years (according to Jack Beesley) but he’s such a sweet striker of the ball that I’d always thought “if we ever get a hold of that guy he’s taking  free-kicks from distance for us.”  Scott reckons he used to try to hit the ball too hard but now has relaxed a bit and his technique and power was there for all to see on 26 minutes (Grim’s posted the goals on P&B). Two superb free kicks goals in two games is a great return and we are all obviously looking for more. It’s like Jimmy Rae with a right foot (for those who can remember).

After the break we continued to play well and created several chances before and after Rees’s right foot (yes right foot) strike. If I was being critical we should have at least doubled our score but any team managed by Peter McNulty are going to compete for 90 minutes and Kelso certainly did that last night.

Thoughts now turn to Easthouses on Saturday. I saw them impress against Super League Musselburgh Athletic a couple of weeks back and they will provide a stern examination for our new look team.” More on that later.”
