Spartans U19 lose out to Hearts in 6 goal thriller

Posted on Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Spartans 19s took on Hearts 17s in a pre season friendly at the academy today. In the first half Spartans struggled to keep up with the fast paced play from Hearts who passed the ball around very well at times. After going 1-0 down, James Cuthbertson equalised with a well finished goal from the left hand side of the box. Spartans did well to keep the score to 2-1 at the break after seeing keeper Iain McTurk save a penalty against his old team.

As the second half commenced and the game wore on the home team managed to get a better grip of the game and started to create more chances for themselves. A bizarre goal direct from a corner saw Hearts go 3-1 up however Spartans soon replied with a neatly finished free kick from the edge of the box from Jordan Finnie. A controversial penalty in the final few minutes of the game made it 4-2 to the visitors and that’s the way it finished. A good exercise for both teams and another step towards the start of the season.

Next up for the 19s is the visit of Dundee United to the academy next Sunday, kick off 12pm.

Spartans: McTurk, Keppie, Shields, Hawkins, Henderson, Atkinson, Finnie, Trialist, Cuthbertson, Ford, Clark. Subs: Hamilton, Veitch, Haldane, Noble, Dickson, McCabe.
