Mike says –

“My team talk last night started on the lines of  – Two games of football are never the same – believe me. If you get it easy against a team then play them again very soon it’s invariably a struggle. Tonight Heriot-Watt have something to prove – they’ll up their game. On the other hand we subconsciously think “they’re not that good – this is going to be easy” then we go out and swan about. I’ll end up going mental on the side trying to get you to up your game and concentrate on the job at hand.

It was an easy observation to make and that’s almost how it turned out. We didn’t get a first minute penalty and as the first half progressed you could see that the students were growing more confident. I was starting to get restless on the side but as half-time approached we forced a number of corners and long throws into the box where nothing seemed to break for us.

That’s another thing about football – sometimes you get the break of the ball and it all comes easy as it did on Saturday and then other times nothing seems to break for you and that’s the way it went in the first half last night. Our players are experience though and despite Sam, Mike and my promptings at half-time we could sense that they knew they’d have to up their game a bit to progress to the semi-final of the League Cup and so they did.

We didn’t chance Keith McLeod last night and with Alex King and David Etale out our small squad included Liam Andrews and Murray Halliday from the Under 19’s. Along with Chris Smith they got a run out later in the game which means we’ve used Liam and Murray along with Liam Donnelly, Andrew Sinclair and of course Jordan Finnie from our under age team this season. That’s a record at Spartans and shows how small our first team squad is and also how good our current crop of youngsters are.

Another goal for top scorer Ross Archibald and Donal Henretty seems to have found his early season shooting boots. It’s a pity he misplaced them for about 4 months. Our thoughts now turn to The Vale on Saturday but more on that game on Friday.”
