Spartans secure victory against Strollers

Posted on Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Goalkeeper Chris Flockhart led us to victory tonight on his 100th appearance for the club. Sadly he didn’t quite get to keep a clean sheet but captained a strong home performance. There were a number of changes from the cup winning team at the weekend. Stewart Fowlie, Danny O’Donnell, Donal Henretty and David Etale replaced Jack Beesley, Omar Kader and Gavin Malin who all dropped to the bench and Keith McLeod who wasn’t included in the squad.

The game started brightly and we forced a corner in the first few seconds. While we had the bulk of the pressure, the gamed was a scrappy affair with limited chances for either team.

We eventually opened the scoring in the 39th minute. David Etale did well to set up Ross Archibald who fired home from about 16 yards.

After the half time break the game started to opened up a bit more. David Etale extended the lead in the 60th minute when he battled onto a high pass and fired the ball home from just outside the box. David pulled up with a calf injury in scoring the goal however and had to be replaced by Omar Kader just a minute later.

Omar then turned provider when he chased down a long ball to cut back into the box for Dean Hoskins to fire in the third in the 67th minute.

Civil then pulled a goal back in the 69th minute. Alan Wilson firing home a well worked goal for the visitors.

Ross Archibald then scored his second of the night in the 80th minute to regain our three goal advantage. Omar again finding space on the right. His cross was met by Alex King whose pass found Ross, allowing him to fire home.

All in all a good performance and we now go on to face Whitehill Welfare away in the 3rd of the King Cup on Saturday.

Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Ross Archibald. Did a fantastic job in defence, midfield and attack tonight. A superb performance.

Team: Flockhart, O’Donnell, Fowlie, Townsley, Sivewright, Henretty, King (Finnie), Manson, Archibald, Etale (Kader), Hoskins (Smith) arch Malin, Beesley
