Manchester United to appear at Ainslie Park

Posted on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Spartans are delighted to announce a pre-season friendly against Manchester United at the Academy on Sunday 24th July as part of our 60th anniversary celebrations.  The United team will be their reserve squad under the guidance of Head Coach Warren Joyce who picked up the role this season from Brian McClair.  Last season United brought the equivalent squad up to Scotland and played St Johnstone and Dunfermline Athletic…winning both games comfortably!!  A United team did come north in 2003 to play our friends at Edinburgh City.

Our Chairman Craig Graham is excited “this will be a great opportunity for everyone at Spartans to have a day we will remember forever, I might even have to dust off my gloves and get down to pre-season training in case Chris picks up an injury!”.

Co Manager Mike Lawson said “The game will obviously be a momentous occasion for all of us involved with Spartans but especially the players who in the future will have memories of playing against the next Giggs, Scholes or Beckham. Craig deserves the credit for approaching United in the first place and it seems for some dreams do come true. I’m sure Grim, our man from Manchester will want to be the Spartans mascot on the big day and lead the team out.”

More details will be announced in due course.
