19s last gasp win…again

Posted on Sunday, September 19th, 2010

The EoS 19s beat Tynecastle 3 – 2 in a game moved to City Park after the overnight rain saturated the Academy stadium pitch. Stephen McGinn and Andrew Sinclair scored our goals before Scott Hunter notched the winner in the 89th minute.

FULL MATCH REPORT

The game against Tynecastle FC was scheduled to be played on the stadium grass pitch at Ainslie Park however due to the adverse weather conditions overnight the match referee decided that certain areas of the pitch were unplayable due to the water lying on it, fortunately City Park was playable and thanks to the parents and Spartans Members who put up the goals the game went ahead with a 1:30 pm kick off.

The game itself was highly contested and Tyncastle took the lead from a breakaway after Spartans had been applying some good pressure on the Tynecastle goal, following the goal a slight re shuffling of positions saw Stevie McGinn pop up on the left hand side of the park and he drove past the defender to slot home the equaliser. The game then flowed from end to end with Spartans having the best of the pressure but with Tynecastle looking dangerous on the break and the industrious Connor Edmonds was driving them on, with Spartans applying some pressure down the right hand side of the park the ball broke up field and Tynecastle scored a second goal just before half time against the run of play giving them a 2 – 1 lead at half time.

The second half started well with Spartans driving forward et every opportunity looking for the equaliser, a good though ball to Murray Halliday saw him break free from the defenders and as he drove for goal he was brought down by the Tynecastle No3 the referee had no alternative but to send the player from the field of play as he was the last man with Murray going in on a goal scoring opportunity the resulting free kick from the edge of the box we came close to scoring. With 10 minutes of the second half gone Liam Donnelly (ankle injury) was replaced by Grieg Patterson in the centre of midfield and with 15 minutes gone a tactical change was made with Murray Halliday coming off and Scott Hunter replacing him with Spartans moving to a front three of Sinclair, Wringe and Hunter this started to create some problems defensively for Tynecastle as it was now constant Spartans pressure, again Tynecastle made a good break and only a last ditch tackle from Matthew Cunningham stopped Spartans from going 3 – 1 down.

With 15 minutes to go Sean Wringe with some neat footwork, close control and great endeavour came in from the left hand side beating three Tynecastle defenders before finding Andrew Sinclair inside the box Sinky made no mistake and drove the ball high into the net for the equalising goal.

With the game now in the balance Spartans continued to press forward and created some good chances however the Tynecastle goalkeeper was having a good game and the ball just would not go into the net Grieg Patterson had a good header saved by the keeper and then there was one cleared of the line.

Scott Hunter was causing the Tynecastle defence many problems with his strong challenges and desire to get on the ball and with one minute of the ninety left he picked up a ball on our left hand side cut inside the defender and unleashed a great strike into the bottom corner of the Tynecastle net with the keeper left stranded.

The pleasing thing about this result was the manner in which the team kept fighting to the end with a never say die attitude and this is something that we will need throughout the season, what we have seen so far is that the League is very competitive and we need to be at the top of our game every week to ensure that we stay in touch with the top of the league.

Our next game on Sunday 26th Sept takes us on our travels to Fauldhouse, we look forward to your support.
