An all Spartan affair for the Ronnie Swan final

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

The Ronnie Swan cup will be staying at Ainslie Park for another season, but which Spartan team will have the honour of lifting their first trophy of the season?

Spartans Juniors and Senior teams both progressed to the final tomorrow with penalty shoot out victories over their Junior Superleague opposition.

The Junior side faced Musselburgh in the first game of the day. Spartans were let off the hook early on when a Dawid Paterek throw out hit a Musselburgh striker and bounced into the net, however the referee chalked the goal off – much to the relief of the Polish keeper. It wasn’t long though until the visitors took the lead with a well worked team goal. Less than 2 minutes later and Musselburgh made it two nil with Paterek unable to prevent the ball crossing the line. Spartans changed formation and forced their way back into the game. New summer signing Clark Campbell pulled one back with a well placed shot before fellow newbie Ross McKenzie’s lobbed shot beat the Musselburgh keeper. Spartans completed an impressive comeback just seconds before the half time whistle when Gary Bannon fired home following some good link up play from Mark Cowan and Kenny Young.

The second half was much tighter with neither side creating many chances. Musselburgh did however score an equaliser with just 5 minutes left. The game finished 3-3 and went to penalties. Musselburgh missed two and Dawid Paterk saved two as the Junior side slotted home 4 out of their 5 penalties to progress to the final.

Team: Paterek, Cruickshank (Trialist), McKibben, Steele, Bannon (Trialist), Campbell, Shanks (Moffat), Antoni, Cowan (Smith), Young (Boyes), McKenzie unused subs: Reid, Robertson,

The Senior team were up next against Superleague side Newtongrange Star. Nitten started former Spartan Adam Perry, his first start since his summer move. The game was even throughout and both team struggled to create many chances. Nitten scored first when Stewart Fowlie was judged to have pushed Gareth Hutchison just inside the box. Steven Thomson set up to convert the penalty and give the visitors the lead. Just a few minutes later and Gavin Malin was tripped in the box which give the Senior side a chance to level things up. Malin dusted himself down, placed the ball on the penalty spot and fired high into the net to equalise. As the game went on it looked more and more likely it would take further penalties to separate the sides and when the match finished 1-1 it meant for the second year running, and becoming a bit of a Ronnie Swan tournament tradition, both first day games would be decided by penalties.

The Senior side stepped up first, missing their first penalty but scoring the rest. Nitten scored their first but back to back saves from Flockhart and an over the bar attempt meant the seniors won 3-1 to set up the all Spartan affair tomorrow afternoon.

Team: Flockhart, O’Donnell (Kader), Hoskins, Townsley, Fowlie, McAuley, King, Manson, Etale (Vinelli), Malin (Henretty), Beesley (Smith) unused subs: McGarrie, Sivewright

Tomorrow’s games will now be:
3rd/4th playoff – Newtongrange Star v Musselburgh (1pm)
Final – Spartans Seniors v Spartans Juniors (3.30pm)

Management thoughts on the weekend.

Mike says

“Like everyone involved with the Senior Team I can’t wait for the season to start in earnest and 14th August still seems a long time away. Pre-season bounce games serve a purpose but playing for a trophy over a weekend is as near to the real thing as you can get. Add the Junior v Senior flavour to it this season and the Ronnie Swan tournament is given an extra edge.

I was around for the first week of pre-season training and returned last weekend to see a much fitter, sharper group of players than I left. Mike Irving takes most of the credit for that and the boys look ready for action. With two games at the weekend and Falkirk on Tuesday its action they are going to get.

Sam and I are looking forward to seeing how Chris and Jack fit into the squad and over the three games we will make sure everyone in the squad gets a run out. For the Newtongrange game tomorrow Cloudie and Archie are both missing and we have still to confirm if Kevin will be back from holiday in time for kick-off.

Dan has left for the bright lights of London and we thank him for the sterling service he provided to both the First Team and the Academy itself. I got in touch with London’s answer to Keith Anderson and we are hopeful Dan will soon be playing at Conference level at least.

Lastly Omar is with us until September when he also heads to London for 9 months as part of the training for his new job. He will hopefully do a Stewart Fowlie and travel up at weekends to remain an integral part of the squad.

I hope you come down and enjoy the action over the next few days”.

Looking ahead to the Ronnie Swan tournament this weekend

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

We’re counting down the days until the Ronnie Swan tournament this weekend. Despite the fact this will just be the 2nd time the trophy has been competed for it has already become the highlight of the pre-season campaign within the club. This year it has a strong Junior feel to it as Musselburgh, Newtongrange Star and our own Junior team take part.

The first fixture of the Saturday sees our Junior side take on Superleague side Musselburgh with a 1pm kick off. We played them at the academy during May in the Fife & Lothians cup quarter final and were unlucky to lose by a single goal. David Cowan shoud have his exciting new signings on show as play our last pre-season games before the league cup starts on Wednesday 4th August.

The Senior side then play Newtongrange Star in the 3.30pm kick off. Nitten are also a superleague side and have signed former Spartan Adam Perry over the summer. This will be new summer signings Chris Townsley and Jack Beesley’s first games on the main pitch at the academy as we look to continue to build on the recent strong performances over Easthouse and Coldstream. Nitten will provide a much tougher test and we hope a large Spartan support will be out for both games.

The two losing teams will play on Sunday with a 1pm kick off before the two winners face off for the Ronnie Swan cup at 3.30. Here’s hoping it is an all Spartan affair!

Tickets are £5/£3 for each day. Season tickets will also be available for purchase at the ground.
