Management thoughts on a second Uni Cup scalp.

Mike –

“The hangover from Saturdays inept second half performance against Heriot-Watt was there for all to see in the first period of our League Cup semi against Edinburgh University last night. Thankfully with some prompting from Sam, Mike and myself at the interval we upped the tempo in the second half and looked much more like our old selves. Cloudie scored the goals which set us up for 3 cup finals in a 6 day period. More of that later.

We changed things around last night bringing in Sean, Stewart and Donal with Omar , Alex and Robbie getting a well earned rest. It’s not the number of games which have been tiring recently but the importance of the games we’ve played. Two semi finals in 4 days brings both physical and mental pressures and Sam and I wanted to keep as many players fresh as possible. That’s the reason Archie and Cloudie got an early bath on Saturday and we’ll be very careful in picking the team for our league game at Rosewell this weekend.

The game itself was much closer than Saturday’s but we expected that. Edinburgh battled hard and passed the ball much better than ourselves for long spells of the match but on the night they lacked a cutting edge up front. It was fitting that our last home game of the season was against our friends from the university and I’d like to wish those now graduating all the best in the professional and football careers. I’ve kept an eye on a few of them through their university years and those not going senior, as I hear Scott Fusco deservedly is, are welcome to join the Spartans family in one of our senior teams. Those not doing post grads or helping Sammy coach the team next year of course.”
