Spartans vs Spartans this Saturday

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

It is an all Spartans affair for the 2nd time this pre-season on Saturday 1st August as Spartans Seniors take on Spartans Juniors.

Mark Lamb’s team is so far unbeaten since becoming a Junior side and go into this match following impressive victories over Stirling University, Peebles, Civil Service Strollers then Kircaldy YM to win the Eddie Queen Memorial Shield. The Junior side includes several former Spartans senior players including Kenny Young & Ollie Anthoni. Key players Jordan Steele and Keith Boyes are both injured and will miss the game as the juniors play their last friendly before their season starts next weekend away to Newtongrange Star.

Mike Lawson and Sam Lynch will be looking to make final adjustments to their team with one eye firmly on their opening game of the season on August 8th against Whitehill. Alex King remains injured however all others players should be available. New summer signings Kevin Sivewright, Sean McAuley, Phil McKibben could feature as well as Michael Moffat and Adam Perry who both played in Mark Lamb’s team last season.

With both teams seasons starting on August 8th this should be a very entertaining game with both sides looking to perform at their very best.

The match is due to kick off at 12:30 on the main pitch at Ainslie Park.

It’s a KnockOut at the Academy this Sunday

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

The Academy is hosting an “It’s a Knockout” team charity event this Sunday 2nd August.  We have entered a Spartans team made up of players from all the teams and the event is in aid of CCLASP, Children with Cancer & Leukaemia Advice & Support for Parents.  Our Spartans team is aiming to raise £500 for the charity and we have set up a Just Giving website to help us get there.  The website is www.justgiving.co.uk/spartans-team.  We are already over £300….it would be great if Spartans fans could pledge even a small amount to help us hit the target.

Another great Spartans day

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

In a pulsating game at the Academy in our Mark Burns benefit match Falkirk beat us 3 – 2.  The introduction of SFL galacticos Ross campbell, Jonny Seeley and ex Spartans skipper Iain Thompson did little for our shape and falkirk deservedly took the lead in 5 minutes when Sludden scored.  We then came into the game and after Donal Henretty was fouled up stepped Mark for a rare penalty which he drove home.  We then took the lead when Tommo’s corner was nodded home by Ross C.  Falkirk quickly equalised through ex Liverpool kid Flynn so it was all square at half time.

Our subs started coming on at half time and as the average age of the team incrased significantly it was left to Dan G and Mark to try and stem the tide from Falkirk.  Fraser then scored the winner with ten to go but the day belonged to Mark.  He is the ultimate inspirational role model and we are honoured to have him in the Spartans family.   Team: Flockhart, Archibald, Gerrard, Seeley, Fowlie, Burns, Henretty, Campbell, McLeod, Manson, Thomson.  Subs…all used! Brown, Perry, Johnson, Ewing, McKeating, Bird, Irvine, Nixon, Malin, Hoskins, Wales, Hughes, Smith, Irvine, Middlemiss, Moffat

Over £900 was raised for SIMBA from the 300 crowd and equally important are the memories.  Thanks to everyone who organised the day and to Phil Johnson for producing what must rank as one of the best Spartans programmes ever.

Elsewhere today our Junior team won the Eddie Queen Tourney Trophy with a 3 – 2 win over Kirkcaldy YM.  Goals from Kenny Young, Iain Cartwright and Gary Bannon.

Our Womens team lost 4 – 2 to Sunderland in a game which could have gone either way. Di Barry scoring both goals and thanks to Sunderland for making the journey north and being part of Mark’s big day.

Todays’ scores

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Friendly Victory

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

In a close encounter tonight we beat Newtongrane Star 1 – 0 with a late Adam Perry strike.  Star had the better of the first half and should have been ahead at the break.  We played better in the second half and might have scored firstly when Gavin Malin’s cross cum shot hit the bar and then when keith Mcleod’s header from a Dean Hoskins cross went wide.  Adam’s goal came with ten to go when he latched onto a Michel Opilka through ball to knock it past the ‘keeper. Team: Flockhart, Archibald (Opilka 70), McKibben, Fowlie, Gerrard, Trialist (Moffat 45), Manson, McAuley, Hoskins, McLeod (Perry 65), Smith (Malin 45)

Tonight’s Friendly

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Our Senior head out tonight to play new Junior Super League side Newtongrange Star, the ko is 7.15.  Our Junior team’s first game of the season is also out at Newtongrange adding spice to tonight’s fixture.  From last weekend’s squad Alex King is out and Danny O’Donnel is now on holiday.  Gavin Malin’s shoulder has recovered to play but Bob Mitchell and David Etale are still just short of match fitness with Omar Kader still also on holiday.  Ross Archibald is however due back shortly.  Chris Smith after his excellent goal on Sunday will start at least one of the games.

With another two games again this weekend the full sqaud will get plenty match practice over the next four days.
