Weekend Action at the Academy

Friday, March 20th, 2009

The 2nd XI are in league action tomorrow against Cumbernauld Colts with a 2.30pm ko.  Manager Mark Lamb welcomes back Jim Rae, Michael Moffat and skipper Mark Burns to his squad but Paul Sutherland and Gary Young are still missing.  We beat Cumbernauld a few weeks ago but they played most of the game with 10 men so it will be much tougher tomorrow.

The 3rd XI play Liberton AVU also in a league game kicking off at 2pm at City Park.  Manager Doug Cowie was disappointed at only drawing last week.  He will have a trialist keeper in goals but he has been training with the club for a couple of weeks and is looking like a first class stopper.

Earlier at the Academy Alec Cunningham’s 17s squad take on Edinburgh City with a 12.30pm ko.
Sunday sees the biggest game of the weekend.  Our Womens 1st XI take on Hibernian in the quarter final of the Scottish Cup.  Hibs had seven players in the Scotland squad who travelled to Cyprus last week whereas we only had ‘keeper Jo Hutchison.  They are the holders but we have beaten them twice already this season and are looking forward to the game.  Coach Shelley Kerr is excited “the girls trained well tonight and we are ready.  This is our biggest home game since we moved to the Academy and hopefully we will get a big home support.  We have heard their star keeper and Scotland captain Gemma Faye may be missing but it’s all about how we play.”

League action moves to Easthouses for the 1st XI

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Our management team have a near full squad to choose from t as we go to Easthouses tomorrow.  The action kicks off at 2.30.  We went there a few weeks ago and it was all square at half time before we got the breaks to win 5 – 0.  Co manager Mike Lawson has been giving us his thoughts: ”

Once the dust had settled on Wednesday night Sam and I had to be very happy with the three points. There wasn’t a reaction to the Cup Final at Meadowbank in the first half but a bit of mental and physical tiredness may have set in after the break. That and a spirited display from the students meant Heriot-Watt won the second 45 minutes 3-2 playing much of that period with 10 men.

We are giving/gave the boys Thursday night off to help them recover from their exertions and hopefully they’ll be refreshed and ready for action at Easthouses.
Last Saturday Alex King and I went down to Yarrow Park along with Keith Anderson to watch the Lily put 5 goals passed Selkirk. Beattie and Curren both looked sharp in front of goal as they tore Selkirk apart in the second half. With Selkirk unexpectedly taking the points at Meadowbank on Wednesday we know that Easthouses are fighting for the lives and are expecting an even harder game that usual.
For our part Daryl Devlyn is back in the frame while both James Hair and David Etale are back up from down South. I think James was down on business but I know David was playing for the Army at football. In his last match against the RAF at Aldershot on Wednesday his team drew 1-1 with David getting the Man of the Match. All three will be in the squad for what is a vital league game for both teams.”

Match Report – goals galore

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

We named an unchanged starting XI for last nights game and it looked pretty even before we opened the scoring after 20 minutes.  Keith McLeod crossing for Omar Kader to net from close range.  Danny O’Donnel scored the second with a great lob from 20 yards before Alex King drove home to make it three with only 38 minutes on the clock.

Heriot Watt Uni changed to a 4 4 2 formation in the second half and looked much stronger.  Lars Berger scored to pull one back before another quick brace from us.  Keith McLeod nodded home a Ross Archibald cross and then a well worked free kick saw Omar Kader tap home f rom a Nicky Walker pass.  The Uni did fight back well with late goals from Koya and McBrayne.

Co-manager Mike Lawson looking ahead to tonight

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

“After reaching the South Challenge Cup Final heights against Edinburgh Uni on Sunday it’s back to the bread and butter of the league against Heriot-Watt tonight.

Other than ourselves and the Uni I’ve seen the Watt more than any other team this season. As well as their recent Tuesday games against City and Whitehill I’ve watched them in the mid-week University league. I even saw them beat leaders Dalbeattie in the opening league game of the season.

I’ll make sure that the players are aware of that fact tonight to go along with Sam’s report on their great win at Rosewell on Saturday.

Because of the outstanding team performance at Meadowbank there’s a good argument for sticking with Sunday’s starting eleven. We’ll wait to see if anyone has picked up a knock or is feeling below par this evening before deciding on the side for Riccarton however.

Donal wasn’t feeling at his best on Sunday and we’ll check him out as well as welcoming Daryl back into full training. David Etale is due back this midweek and may also force himself into contention.

I’m delighted that this squad of players have something tangible to go with their Scottish Cup memories this season but we are all well aware we have a chance of more silverware on two fronts.Tonight will be a very difficult evening but one we are prepared for and looking forward to”
