Disappointing day at ElginMatch Report Mike and Sam went with a 3 5 2 formation and we started superbly putting the much changed Elgin line up under considerable early pressure. Nicky Walker came closest when on a 1 on 1 at an angle the debutant Elgin ‘keeper, Joe Malin, blocked his drive. Elgin did come more into the game and Chris Flockart had to look alert from Crooks and then Wright. The best chance of the first half again fell to Nicky Walker when put through by Keith McLeod but again the ‘keeper saved. The second half was only seven minutes old when Wright drove home from 20 yards into the top corner. Walker again came close when his cross cum shot was blocked on the line by Niven with McLeod waiting. The second Elgin goal came from the head of Nicholson from MacDonald’s corner. The next incident saw both Wright and Alex King sent off after Wright appeared to butt King, King pushing back to get a second yellow. The game opened up as we threw everything forward and evetually our goal came from Donal Henretty’s volley with seven minutes left. We still had time with a few chances. Indeed in the last two minutes Dean Hoskins hit the side net from close range and then a great Robbie Manson cross gave Danny O’Donnel the chance of glory from five yards but his header was pushed aside by man of the match Malin. We certainly had the chances to at least get a draw but it wasnt to be and Elgin have a trip to Airdrie in Round 4 to look forward to. Team: Flockart, Gerrard, Archibald , Fowlie, Kader (Malin), Manson, King, O’Donnel, Henretty, McLeod (Devlin), Walker (Hoskins) Subs not used: Smart and Woods
Robbie Manson was the Spartans man of the match. Spartans manager Mike Lawson said “to win games you have to take your chances, we created more than we did against Pollok or Annan but it wasnt to be”. |
