U-19 Match Report – Spartans 8 Berwick Rangers 2

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Spartans carried out a demolition job on Berwick Rangers in their first round clash in this season’s SFA Youth Cup at City Park and the Capital combine had virtually booked their place in the draw for the second round by leading 6-1 at half-time! This game on a very heavy pitch with sludge and rubbish stewn around the railings that mark off the playing field at City Park was quite exceptional at the start, with both teams playing impressive football, but the home side gradually took command with Bradley Snodgrass in tremendous form in the midfield for Spartans.

The attacks on the Berwick goal increased with Dale Murray looking exceptional on the right wing. The Spartans No 7 was one of the star performers in the home side’s attack force in the first half, along with Chris Smith and Steven Philp. Berwick were pushed back as the intensity of the Spartans attacks built up and when the impressive Dale Murray on the right turned the Berwick inside out before delivering a great ball across for Michael Fruish to open the home side’s account in the 7th minute, the Berwick side looked to be struggling to hold back the tide. Results – two big wins

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

The 1st XI recorded a comprehensive 6 – 1 victory over Eyemouth United in the South Regional Cup.  It was 2 – 0 at half time with Daryl Devlin and Nicky Walker scoring.  Eyemouth scored early in the second half and fought well for fifteen minutes before we took control with further goals from Danny O’Donnell, Scott Livingston, Daryl Devlin and Gavin Malin.  The draw for the next round of the cup was made at Muirhouse at 5pm and it paired us with Dalbeattie, the game to be played at City Park.  Dalbeattie put us out of the cup last season so a chance for revenge!

The 2nd XI won 7 – 1 against Garrowhill Thistle in the League Cup although Harestanes won to head the section and go through to the last 8.  Nick reid scored another hat trick with the other goals from Danny Forbes, Paul Sutherland, Michael Moffat and a trade mark free kick from Andy Mitchell.  It was 2 – 1 at half time with coach Mark Lamb not happy with the first 45 minutes however a few choice words later the application improved well.

Scottish Youth Cup Round 1

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

Our 19s kick off their Scottish Cup exploits witha  home tie against Berwick Rangers at City park tomorrow…ko is 2pm.  We’re hoping for a big crowd, last season our 19s lost on penalties to Whitehill Welfate who then drew Rangers in the next round!  Loads at stake tomorrow and its always great for us to take on SFL opposition.

Scottish Cup Draw

Monday, September 8th, 2008

In the Scottish Cup first round draw this morning we drew Pollock away, the tie to be played on September 27th.  Chairman Craig Graham commented “I don’t think we could have been given a tougher tie.  Pollock have already started their season very well and by all accounts were very unfortunate not to beat league team Montrose in their Scottish Cup run last season.   We had a great day out and game at Linlithgow last season, we’re therefore looking forward to an equally good day but obviously a more favourable result.  Since losing out on an SFL space in July we have lost three players (Jon Seeley, Ross Campbell and Kevin Motion) to SFL teams and although it’s great to see all three doing well it does mean our squad doesn’t have the strength in depth it did have.  We will go through to Glasgow as the underdogs but determined to play as well as we can.”

Details on supporters travel will be posted on the site later this week.
