Is a marriage over an anvil made in heaven?

Posted on Saturday, July 12th, 2008

9.45.                     For years everyone associated with East of Scotland football has looked on enviously at the publicity the Juniors, Highland League and even the South League gets compared to ourselves. It’s been proved on the park that the top EOS sides can live with any non league opponents but we’re always bottom of the pile when it comes to newspaper inches.

Don’t get me wrong individual clubs, ourselves included, make a few headlines with Scottish Cup exploits but that is always about the club and the Scottish Cup, never about our league.

Well for a short time at least that’s all changed. Gretna being accepted as an EOS club next season has made the TV, all the papers and is the centre of some heated debate on the Forums. For once our league and their decision to take Gretna on board has catapulted “us” into the limelight.

We will all have our opinions of the decision made on Thursday but the bottom line is that decision has been made. Whether we think it is a good thing or bad we have all to hope that Gretna prove a good addition to East of Scotland football. As they sort themselves out the media will be watching and waiting on a positive outcome or the opposite.

Whatever I think personally I wish them well. I hope they manage to play their football at Raydale and I hope they prove to be more than a one club publicity machine for our league by turning out to be a competitive team pushing for East of Scotland honours.

Now where’s that team talk for the East Fife game? Do you think the referee will want a team sheet filled in or just a list of the numbered players? How many of our lot are at “T in the Park”? Will the rest all turn up in time and in good health? I take it AK’s knackered – I’ll phone him. Fowlie, Henretty and Campbell are all in Fife and going direct. Are they the only ones? Is Dougie taking Maxi’s mini-bus? Did Tarzan pack a goalkeepers after Thursday’s mishap?

It’ll be a bed of roses for Csaba Lazlo at Tynecastle compared with managing an East of Scotland side.
