Irritating rain and irrigation pain.
July 10, 2008
Our climate is changing. You can blame global warming, going into a new ice age, coming out of Iceland, whatever you like but we are now getting more rain and more frequently than at any time I can remember.
When you manage a football team rain brings on anxiety. “Well Peffermill be cancelled again tonight? - what will we do if it is?” I’m looking out the window this morning and hoping that it isn’t as wet through at Stirling University. “What if we get through there and Stirling Uni put the game off.” Universities look after their playing fields.
It’s worse on a Saturday. Just look at the hassle WW had last season. More games are put off because of rain that any other single factor these days. Having proper drainage is a major factor in building any new ground.
When we move to our new academy we’ll train two nights a week on field turf. I think with all the teams we have we’ll still use Peffer but later this year my workmates can comment all they like if it’s raining outside. I’ll be a bit calmer in the office if anyone looks out the window in the coming months.
Our new park has a special irrigation system which only three other football pitches in Scotland have. Ironic isn’t it. All this rain is no doubt hindering us getting the drainage in place thus putting back the sowing of the seed and thus putting back us getting a chance to use our new irrigation system to help the grass grow.
It never rains but it pours.
