When it Rains it Pours

Posted on Friday, July 4th, 2008

Late.                The story I told yesterday of the events surrounding Sam, Dougie, Cloudie and myself hearing the result of the SFL election process was true. I was standing between the yellow pegs on the 10th tee at Kilspindie with an 8 iron in my hand. The rain had just started with gusto. I did shank my tee shot onto Craigielaw and I did get hit on the calf by a golf ball which went astray on the 9th, all just as Derick sent a text saying we hadn’t made it.

Talk about lucky white heather. Well you can talk about it again today.

I got an Email from Easyjet this morning with special late summer savings. The offer closes on Tuesday so earlier this evening I checked a few flights around the school holiday in October. Had we been successful getting into the SFL my frequent breaks missing the odd game would have ceased. Easyjet do a Sunday flight out of Newcastle which comes back on a Friday. I use that a lot anyway and it would have been all I’d have booked in future during the season. That would have been fine for me.

Anyway we’re EOS again this season so I checked from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle. I compared them with Globespan but the best by a mile was out of Newcastle and to minimise me missing any Spartans games I was homing in on leaving Sunday 19th and coming home on the morning of Saturday the 25th. I’d miss the start of the game on the 25th but be back up for the second half at least.

You know where this is going don’t you?

I thought of Emailing Mr Mclean to ask what the fixtures were that day. I thought of checking the SFA website to see if the Scottish Cup dates had been released. Anyway I had another look an hour later and one of the flights had increased by £2.50. With 5 of us going it was costing me by the minute.

Easyjet had obviously sent the same Email to more than me – that’s a bit off.

Stuff it I booked the flights.

Ten minutes later I got an Email from Phil Johnston with the Scottish Cup dates which have just been released. The early rounds are as follows

Round 1       Saturday, 27th September, 2008
Round 2      Saturday, 25th October, 2008
Round 3      Saturday, 29th November, 2008
Round 4      Saturday, 10th January, 2009

To be honest at this moment the thought of playing an SFL side in the Scottish Cup doesn’t excite me one little bit but that’s a different story all together. I also suppose the 3.00 KO gives me more time to get back up the road.

In a similar situation last season I booked a Saturday evening flight which cost be a bit extra but would have allowed me to be at our game that afternoon. That was of course before we drew Fort William away in the Scottish Cup.

How much luck can one person get?

When it rains it really does pour.
