Didn’t They Do Well - How Did I Hear The Big Result?

July 3, 2008

Late.               We were concerned about training tonight. Sam, Mike and I were concerned about how the players would react to the SFL vote this afternoon. We needn’t have worried as players are a resilient bunch. They were pleased they were going to get an easier night as we are now starting our season a bit later than we had to prepare for.

Well done done boys. Your attitude tonight helped lift me for one.

While I’m saying well done I have to say well done to the good people who run and play for Annan. I sent Alan a text to that effect not long after I heard the news this afternoon. We at Spartans have a lot of friends at Galabank but I’d single out three.

Alan Irvine and Sam Wallace are two gentlemen I’ve known now for going on eighteen years. They are two of the best people involved with any club (I nearly said non-league club) I’ve ever dealt with.  The other person I’m particularly happy for is Chris Jardine. I’ve always admired Chris as a player and I’m delighted he’s getting to show his skills on a bigger stage.

I hope Annan do well and I hope they remember next season they will be representing the East and South of Scotland leagues.

I played golf with Sam, Dougie and Cloudie today. I though it would be a better way of waiting for news than sitting in an office. The golf and the weather started brightly but for me at least it all started to go downhill about the turn.

I love golf but have a horrible swing. Don’t get me wrong when I hit it I hit it and round the greens my short game is quite good. My problem is I shank and shank a lot (now don’t titter misses) with my irons. Today I was playing away and contributing a bit until we reached the 8th. I’d only shanked once until I stood on the 8th tee at Kilspindie. Three balls in the sea and I was starting to wobble.

A 5 up the hill at the 9th wasn’t bad but on the Par 3 10th tee my world fell apart.

I was standing on the tee when the rain came on and came on heavy. I ignored it and swung at the ball with my 8 iron. Whizz - my shank veered off to the right onto the ajoining Craigielaw course. As I let out a curse I heard “four” as the guy playing up the 9th pulled his ball in our direction.  I shut my eyes the ball hit me on the calf with a thud an bounced back onto the 9th fairway.

I gave a hop and at the same my mobile beeped to tell I had a message. It was from Derick and said “third”.

That is exactly how I found out our attempt to get into the SFL closed shop had failed.

Am I down? Of course I’m down. I’m down because I think the wrong decision was made. Our new ground isn’t quite ready and I can understand why the vote went to a good team run by good people. If those making their votes today had any forsight they would have voted for a great team run by good people.

Life goes on and we’ll be ready for an assalt on the EOS Premier League this season.

Nothing else matters.
