Excuses

Posted on Friday, June 27th, 2008

It was good to see the two D’s make their first training appearance of the season last night. Dan and Deano both had similar excuses relating to the opposite sex for missing the first two sessions. Dan has struggled to make it home from Lady’s Day at Ascot (he must have backed a winner – backed I said) and Deano’s had a tiff with his better half (schoolboy error using that as an excuse) and has been moving gear about. Anyway they and all the other players worked very hard last night and they may get a kick of the ball on Saturday.

Talking about working hard – how disappointing were the Russians last night? Don’t get me wrong I wanted Spain to win but like every other football fan out there I thought it would and wanted it to, be a lot closer. About 25 minutes into the second half the guy next to me in the pub asked when baby-face had been taken off. Ten seconds later he appeared on the screen only to give the ball away.

It was a game too far for this young Russian side.

The Final will be a different proposition and although the Germans will have more support than Spain in the ground I’d expect the football world at large to be supporting my Spanish brothers.

Getting into the SFL is like the election campaign in America. One minute your up after seeing or hearing something positive and the next your down after seeing or hearing the opposite. At least unlike the Yanks we’ve less than a week to go to hear the good or bad news.

We know by mid September we’ll have a ground fit for SFL football but how do we get that across to 29 chairmen. I’m confident the players would give it there all if they got the chance and I think our support would surprise a few but we live in an instant world.

A good flat surface needs time to grow but will we get that time?

I’m going to change my work option day from Wednesday to Thursday next week as I’d be a waste of space in the office the day of the vote.

If it was good enough for Denis Law in ’66 it’ll be good enough for, Sam, Dougie, Jimmy and myself on Thursday next as we’re heading for the golf course.
