Holland v Russia

June 21, 2008

Late. Quite a lot to say tonight but with the rain pounding off the conservatory roof I think I’ll save some of it for tomorrow morning. How about waking up to our first training session of pre-season, something about our Scottish Cup-ties against Livie and St Mirren Hutch pointed out to me in the pub at tea-time and an interesting Email I received from a Meadowbank fan corroborating my recollection of the Bankies travelling support.

A big night of sport on the Tele tonight. I’d watched some of the one day cricket game this afternoon and because the Holland v Russia game was on ITV I caught some of it and a rugby game during the adverts.

Having seen New Zealand struggle earlier I thought it was a no contest. How wrong was I (again I hear you say). The New Zealand tail end got a few extra runs and England collapsed in the way they usually keep for important Test Matches.

I also challenged Churchill without a nodding dog in sight as Scotland “A” went down to the Saxons at rugby in the final in Toronto . Scotland were holding their own for a while and if Bunnett had gone on it might have been different. Losing all that weight meant he was ignored. Let’s face it have you ever seen a rugby player with a 28 inch waist.

Khan could and Gomez couldn’t in an entertaining Commonwealth lightweight defence where Michael did much better than any of us thought.

Now the football.

What a shame for my wife’s fancy man to end his international career of over 100 caps with a defeat and the ball going through his legs.

“Your wife’s fancy man - what’s that all about”.

Well a few years back Irene sold her house and moved in with me. As we were packing all her stuff we had a look through some old photo albums she had. “This is me and my pal in our Uni days when we went to Spain on holiday.” she said as I checked some photos. “Oh! he said he played for Ajax but I preferred his mate” she said as I looked at a very young Edwin Van der Sar. Irene assures me nothing happened but it’s been a standing joke between us every time he appears on the box.

“There’s mummy’s boyfriend” I told the boys as the teams stood for the National Anthems. Irene then came out with a schoolgirl error. “You better not put anything on the Blog about it” she said.

Now my son Murray might only be five but he’s a sharp wee cookie. The words had hardly left her lips when he started singing (to the words of “Who Ate All The Pies”) Put it on the blog - put it on the blog - go on Daddy - go on Daddy - put it on the Blog. Well I’m embellishing the story with - go on daddy - but the rest is true.

For the game itself Russia deserved to win and that young guy who doesn’t shave his chest or his chin is a player and a half.

No wonder Rangers lost in Manchester.

There you go - a good few paragraphs and no Spartan’s propaganda.

Don’t worry you’ll get that tomorrow morning.
